COVID-19: Illness killed more than 96,000 people worldwide

According to data collected by the French news agency, more than one and a half million cases of infection have been officially diagnosed in 193 countries and territories since the pandemic began last December in China.

The United States is the country most affected in number of cases, with 466,299 cases and 16,686 deaths, with Europe continuing to be the continent with the highest number of reported cases (826,382) and deaths (66,642).

Italy is the European country with the highest number of deaths (18,279), followed by Spain (15,843), France (12,210) and the United Kingdom (7,978).

In Belgium, in the last 24 hours, there were 496 deaths, bringing the total to 3,019, while in Spain there were 605 more deaths, the lowest number since March 24.

Latin America and the Caribbean passed the 50,000 reported cases, with more than 2,000 deaths, with Brazil being the most affected country, with 17,847 cases and 941 deaths.

AFP warns, however, that the number of diagnosed cases reflects only a fraction of the actual number of infections, as a large number of countries are now testing only those cases that require hospital care.
