Worrying though, the health situation in the Calvados remains much less worrying than in other areas of French territory. Data from Public Health France even show a slight decline in the incidence rate in the department in recent days, while it is constantly increasing at the national level.
Slight decline since March 20
However, it had followed the same curve since the beginning of the month, as shown in our infographic below.
As of March 24, 2021 (rolling week of March 18 to 24, 2021), this rate stood at 217.9 positive cases per 100,000 inhabitants, in Calvados, against 350.4 nationally. On Wednesday March 24, 2021, 273 people were declared positive throughout the department, out of the 4321 tested that day.
Variants well present
As of March 23, 2021, 37.7% of positive people in Calvados are infected with a variant of the coronavirus. 69.9% of these are by the British variant and 5% by the South African or Brazilian, according to figures from the Regional Health Agency.
However, some sectors are more affected than others. 24 municipalities thus have a rate greater than 1,000, mainly in the east of the department, Pays d’Auge and Côte Fleurie, as well as in the Bocage Virois. These are mainly very sparsely populated villages, in which a small number of cases may be enough to raise the average.

The map of the incidence rate in Calvados shows that the Pays d’Auge and the Bocage virois are the two natural regions most affected by the circulation of the virus. As we get closer to the city center, Caen, the virus is less present.
In the Caen la Mer urban community, four municipalities have an incidence rate of less than 10: Eterville, Carpiquet, Periers-sur-le-Dan and Lion-sur-Mer.
AT Caen even, the sectors where the virus circulates most actively (rate between 250 and 500) are the districts of Guérinière West, Sainte-Thérèse, the lower part of Venoix, as well as, in the city center, the surroundings of the Jardin des plants and the Prefecture.
