Frank Martinez and his wife, Masako, have been “inseparable since they met,” according to their niece.

“They wanted to see each other so badly,” Kim Presson, nurse for Masako “Terry” Martinez at St. Elizabeth Hospital, told USA Today.

Presson recalled Masako, 86, often asking for her husband since she was hospitalized on January 22. When Frank, 93, was admitted three days later, he started asking questions about his wife’s condition.

COVID patients are often separated from loved ones in hospital, Presson said. What caught the nurse’s attention the most was that this couple had no children and couldn’t use hospital-provided technology, like iPads, to keep in touch with each other. with the others, she said.

“They had always been just together and depended on each other so much,” Presson said. “I thought, ‘You know what, let’s see if we can do it.’ “

On January 27, nurses transferred Frank to Masako’s bedroom, with medical equipment to support them both, and placed him in a reclining chair next to his bed, Presson said.

While they watched the news and some game shows, they had a “mini Thanksgiving dinner,” which included turkey, green beans, stuffing, and mashed potatoes.

Also during dinner, the video of the nurses called Weissmann and sent her photos, which she then shared with her family.

Weissmann told nurses the gesture “meant the whole world to her.” Presson said it meant just as much to them.

“We have very limited possibilities to have positive or joyful experiences, given the current state of health care,” she said. “It was definitely the highlight of my day and the unit that day. “

For her, she said, it was “a reminder that there is still joy to be found in there, there is still happiness and we are going to get through it.”

Frank and Masako are still hospitalized. Presson said they were both improving and Weissmann told USA Today on Friday “they are absolutely going in the right direction.”

Weissmann and the whole family can’t wait to have a safe and socially distant party to welcome the couple home.
