Covid-19 Goes Crazy, WHO Urges Rich Countries to Donate Vaccines to Poor Countries

JAKARTA, HARIANHALUAN.COM – World Health Organization (WHO) continues to monitor the availability of the Covid-19 vaccine in a number of countries around the world. The reason is, WHO asked rich countries to immediately donate Covid-19 vaccines for poor countries.

Because according to WHO, poor countries really need it in an emergency like today. WHO refers to the inappropriate steps of the developed and rich countries in the world that trigger global failure. Because, instead of donating vaccines, rich countries vaccinate young people.

According to WHO, young people are not at great risk of Covid-19.

“The situation in Africa, where new infections and deaths jumped by almost 40 percent last week compared to the previous week is extremely dangerous, as the Delta variant virus spreads globally. As a global world community we are failing,” said WHO Director-General, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, quoted by Reuters via Okezone.com, Monday (28/6/2021).

Furthermore, Tedros criticized the behavior of the rich countries (who were not named) because they were reluctant to share the dose with low-income or poor countries.

He cited the situation with the HIV/AIDS crisis, when some argued that African countries could not use complex health care.

“The problem now is a supply issue, just give us the vaccine. The difference is between the rich and the poor who are now truly exposing the injustices of our world. Injustice and inequality, let’s face it.”

To note, together with the GAVI vaccine alliance, WHO is currently running the COVAX program, a program to provide free Covid-19 vaccines from donor countries to various poor and developing countries in the world.

The COVAX program itself is known to date, has delivered 90 million doses of Covid-19 vaccine to 132 countries since February 2021. But now, there are problems with massive supply, since India as a vaccine-producing country has suspended its vaccine exports.

From the testimony of WHO senior adviser Bruce Aylward, this month COVAX did not have a supply of Covid-19 vaccine.

“We went through COVAX this month with zero doses of AstraZeneca vaccine, zero doses of SII vaccine (Serum Institute of India), and zero doses of J&J vaccine (Johnson & Johnson). The situation right now is very bad,” Bruce said.
