COVID-19: Foxconn paralyzes factories in China over outbreaks | Coronavirus | DW

Taiwanese technology Foxconnknown for being the world’s largest assembler of telephones iPhonereported this Monday (03.14.2022) of the temporary suspension of operations at its factories in the southeastern Chinese city of Shenzhen, in which a week-long confinement was announced due to the latest outbreaks of COVID-19.

“Thanks to the diversification of our production poles in China, we have adjusted the production line to minimize the potential impact,” said a company spokesman quoted by the Hong Kong newspaper. South China Morning Postwhich notes that no date has been specified for the resumption of operations in Shenzhen.

The duration of this suspension will depend on the measures taken by the local authorities, who ruled the confinement of the city, of more than 17 million inhabitants, ordering the paralysis of public transport and teleworking -except in basic services- until the next day March 20.

The nearly 200,000 people who work in Foxconn in its two Shenzhen complexes they will have to undergo tests for COVID-19, along with other measures aimed at trying to prevent them from becoming infected.

The company, one of the main suppliers of the American technology Apple, opened its first factory in China 34 years ago in Shenzhen, although in recent years it has been shifting part of its production to other inland areas where labor costs are lower. In Zhengzhou, capital of the central province of Henan, Foxconn opened the world’s largest factory iPhone.
