Exactly one week has passed since September 1, and the disease with Covid-19 has been confirmed for a student of Riga East Secondary School. Along with the first patient, the whole class went to home quarantine – in addition to this student, 14 other classmates and now four teachers, who, in the opinion of epidemiologists, were infected at the school of the nearest contact person.
The school said it had received a call last Friday from a student’s mother who had taken the Covid-19 test and received a positive response.
The student himself felt good, without complaints. The student has not come to school this week, and since Monday, September 7, the whole class has been studying remotely.
“The first case was that [konstatēja] the mother of the child, then immediately the mother took her child to the test, and on Saturday it was revealed that the child also has this infection, and then the Center for Disease Prevention and Control called and reported to the school that the child has this infection. They have been quarantined at home for two weeks, “said Ilze Sondore-Drukaļska, Deputy Director of Riga East Secondary School.
In turn, four teachers were issued sick leaves. The others continue to work.

Parents are not allowed to go inside the school, the youngest children are waiting in the yard. Also the father of a 5th grade student Aleksandrs. He learns about the discovered case of Covid-19 from Latvian Television.
“Maybe we should look in the e-class. I don’t know, maybe there was information I haven’t looked at,” Alexander said. Asked if this worries him, the student’s father said, “Of course yes. I didn’t like the fact that there was distance learning in the spring. I don’t know what will happen next, but it’s bad that there is such a situation in our school.”
In total, the school has about 500 students. But there is no reason to worry.
“For us, training is provided in streams and there are different entrances for different class groups, and training takes place in the same room. Teachers travel, so they are also the only contacts for teachers,” said the deputy principal of the high school.
But the class in which the student and his classmates stayed is disinfected and no one uses it for two weeks.
“We did not perform the Covid-19 test on staff, but we know who had left, this information was discussed. But now that the student is infected, we have applied this Covid-19 test to educators and other staff,” said the school’s deputy principal.
The precautionary measures introduced at the school are praised by the Center for Disease Prevention and Control (SPKC). That is why the school can continue to work. A total of 19 people have been quarantined, all of them are monitored by family doctors. Meanwhile, the path of infection of a particular student is still being studied.
“We are currently working on the sources of infection, there are versions of the work, but we can say that they are not related to school and are not related to traveling outside Latvia.
It must be said here that the patient had symptoms and, accordingly, when these symptoms appeared, he had not gone to an educational institution, “said the representative of the SPKC Ilze Arāja.
Covid-19 tests are planned for those quarantined students and educators who will have health complaints in the next two weeks.
