Despite the decline in the number of new people infected with COVID-19 in Bulgaria, experts predict a new peak of the fifth wave. This was stated in the studio of “Awake” by the mathematician Lachezar Tomov. According to him, the increase in cases will be seen in a week or two at the most.
The week in which the students were home due to the interim vacation is the reason for the last few days to see fewer new infected on a daily basis, say mathematicians. According to them, however, the numbers will soon go up again, as a large part of the population has not yet met Omicron.
Tomov: A second peak of the COVID wave awaits us
And pediatricians are seeing an increase in cases of children in kindergartens, which, unlike schools, have not remained closed during this wave.
In the last 3 weeks, pediatricians have reported an increase in infected children, which was not the case in the previous waves of the pandemic. The symptoms in young patients differ from those in adults, notes Dr. Mineva.
“About 40 to 50% of the children who went through the offices in the DCCs are positive for COVID. Many children come with complaints of abdominal pain combined with fever. In some of the children there is vomiting, in others the gastrointestinal manifestations “, explained the pediatrician Dr. Penka Mineva.
The highest number of infected children is in kindergartens.
“In the last week, due to limited contact with students in connection with the holidays, there has been some reduction in morbidity, but in children in kindergartens between 3 and 6 years, there is still a significant increase in morbidity,” added the pediatrician.
Growth of children infected with coronavirus
Mathematicians estimate that the incidence of coronavirus in children has increased 18-fold since the advent of Omicron. The forecast is for a new peak of the wave after the interim vacation.
“Now there will be another jump in the children with some delay, on average two weeks later there will be another jump in the adults. We will have another jump, another decline “, explained the mathematician Lachezar Tomov.
According to Lachezar Tomov, it is too early to loosen the measures in our country.
“We have a large part of the population that has not yet been affected by the virus – in villages, in isolated regions. This time, with this option we have, it will be everywhere, if left unchecked. We do not know how many elderly people in the villages have been released from previous infections, “the mathematician added.
The deaths from the fifth wave could reach 10,000 or almost twice as many as those currently registered, Tomov added.
