Covid-19 Delta Variant Has Entered Jogja, How to Use the Right Mask?

Harianjogja.com, JAKARTA – Corona virus cases in Indonesia, including Jogja, have increased again thanks to the Delta variant. In the United States, new cases due to the Delta variant were up nearly 70 percent in just a week and hospitalization needs were up nearly 36 percent.

The spikes were most pronounced in areas where vaccination rates were low, but there were also increases in places with high vaccination rates. Almost all health officials in the world are urging people who are not vaccinated to get an injection immediately.

“This is becoming a pandemic for those who are not vaccinated. If you remain unvaccinated, you are at risk,” said CDC Director Dr. Rochelle Walensky, quoted from npr.org, Monday (19/7/2021).

But if you’ve been vaccinated, are new precautions still needed like wearing a mask in public again? Many health experts say this might be a smart move, especially when you’ll be in a room with people who may not have been vaccinated.

“I’m going to do it, I don’t stop wearing a mask indoors,” said Chu of the University of Washington.

Wearing a mask may make sense especially in places with rising infection rates. But there are still many people who are not vaccinated and do not follow the guidelines for wearing masks outdoors. This can put people at risk of contracting the Covid-19 virus, including children, and people who are immunocompromised.

It is recommended for everyone to keep wearing a mask in public places, even if the person has been fully vaccinated. Because if you have been exposed, a person can still be infected and transmit it to others.

It’s been almost two months since the CDC announced new guidelines stating that fully vaccinated people don’t need to wear masks in most places, but the World Health Organization (WHO) is still encouraging people to wear masks.

Health researcher Ali Mokdad of the University of Washington’s Institute of Health Metrics and Evaluation said he wanted the CDC to reinstate the national mask mandate, given the daily increase in cases.

“That’s the only way we can send a signal to the public in the United States that we are not out of harm’s way and we can encourage people to go and get a vaccine,” Ali Mokdad said in an official statement.
