Covid-19 / Day is on the rise again in several European countries

According to the European Center for Disease Prevention and Control, which is calculated from a population data source other than SPKC, the 14-day cumulative morbidity rate per 100,000 population in Latvia is currently 398.1 cases, compared to 461.9 cases a week ago. . Meanwhile, the European Union (EU) average has risen to 381.1, up from 328.9 a week earlier.

Latvia ranks 17th among all European countries in terms of the incidence of Covid-19, notes the SPKC.

The highest incidence in the world is currently in two EU countries, the Czech Republic, which ranks first with a 14-day cumulative rate of 1518.3 per 100,000 population, and Estonia, which currently ranks second in terms of incidence.

Estonia’s cumulative indicator increased to 1464.1 last week, but a week earlier it was 1397.1, while Lithuania’s indicator decreased to 223.5 or 83.1 less than a week earlier.

Compared to previous periods, a decrease in the incidence is still observed in Latvia, however, several strains of SARS-CoV-2 detected abroad have also been registered. To date, strain B.1.1.7 detected in the United Kingdom has been identified in the country, but information has been received this week on seven cases of strain A.23.1 registered in Uganda. Both strains are characterized by being more contagious and spreading more rapidly among humans.

Despite the decrease in morbidity rates in Latvia and several other EU countries, SPKC does not recommend going abroad, as visiting other countries is considered a risk factor – in some countries not only an increase in morbidity but also other types of the virus that are not yet registered in Latvia.

The SPKC calls on the population to adhere to national safety measures to reduce the incidence of Covid-19. The app Stop Covid can help you find out more quickly if you have been in contact with Covid-19, allowing you to take precautions more quickly without putting your loved ones, colleagues and others around you at risk, as infections are most common with family, work, friends and acquaintances.
