COVID-19 Data: Cases Among SF Children Are Low, Schools Remain Safe

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. (KRON) – When kids return to the classroom, parents may want to make sure they are healthy and protected from COVID-19.

COVID-19 cases in children and in schools are closely monitored by the San Francisco Department of Public Health.

The data shows that cases in these 18 and younger continue to be low and that schools that follow proper safety protocols remain low risk environments.

The SFDPH also provides resources in San Francisco communities such as:

  • Free vaccinations for all eligible people
  • Testing services
  • Critical guidance and support for schools on COVID security measures
  • Case investigations and contact tracking at schools

The school and children’s data are updated weekly and published on the City dashboard.

As of Monday, September 6, San Francisco pediatric cases remained less than 20% of the total.

Pediatric cases have been fairly constant over the course of the pandemic. In the last few months, the following positive cases were registered in children:

  • August: 12,8%
  • July: 10.8%
  • June: 12.8%
  • May: 17%

Additionally, data shows that severe cases of COVID-19 among children in San Francisco are rare, and vaccinations continue to be the best defense against the virus – approximately 90% of San Francisco’s 12-17 year olds are fully vaccinated.

As of Wednesday, September 8, the San Francisco Unified School District has reported 227 cases from approximately 52,000 students and nearly 10,000 employees.

As of Friday, September 3, 61 cases were reported from approximately 22,500 students and nearly 5,000 employees in San Francisco’s private, parish, and charter schools.

The Ministry of Health says most of the infections have occurred outside of schools.

Regarding transmission at school, the data shows that it was “so low that it cannot be reported publicly without regard to privacy and confidentiality. All other cases reported in schools were related to the community broadcast outside of school as of September 8th.

At this time, there have been no COVID-19 outbreaks in San Francisco schools, camps, and learning centers.

In the 2020-2021 school year, officials said seven cases of COVID were transmitted on campus. All other reports were broadcast by the community outside of the schools.
