Actors within the Surinamese healthcare sector have been instructed by President Santokhi to assemble a team to manage the current Covid-19 situation in Suriname. The team will have to come up with a crisis plan for the next three months.
The parties met at the Cabinet of the President on Monday 11 October 2021 with the Head of State, Minister of Health Amar Ramadhin, Minister Albert Ramdin and Vaccination Coordinator Gavier Asin, to discuss the situation that is placing enormous pressure on healthcare.
The entire National Hospital Council (NZR), members of the Association of Medici in Suriname (VMS), the Regional Health Service (RGD) and the Association of Regional Doctors (VRA) were present. “The meeting has been called because we are in a very big crisis. We are at a point in the care sector, where many systems have to function under heavy pressure, not to talk about a slowly emerging vaccination program,” said Minister Ramadhin.
The government through President Santokhi has expressed concern about the situation. Both the ministers and the representatives of the care actors have given their opinion amply. Minister Ramadhin talks about practical matters that need a solution. In addition to the availability of equipment and consumables, the availability of personnel is a major problem, he says. The minister emphasizes that there are also enough vaccines available.
A follow-up meeting is planned for Tuesday 12 October, during which the preconditions such as finances will be discussed in a smaller setting. Minister Ramadhin: “In any case, there is a good feeling among everyone and the government that they are satisfied with the course of the meeting. We are in a good mood.”
