Researchers actually suspected the transmission of COVID-19 in advance. However, the evidence of airborne transmission of COVID-19 in the field is still very limited.
“The suspicion of possible airborne transmission has long been suspected, but with limited empirical evidence. Our study provides epidemiological evidence of long-term transmission, which is likely to be airborne,” said Ye Shen, a professor of epidemiology and biostatistics at UGA’s College of Public Health and lead author of the study, quoted from the Times of India.
The study published in JAMA Internal Medicine examines transmission activity COVID-19 on an air-conditioned bus. A number of the people studied were known to have attended religious services in Zhejiang province.
Some of the participants boarded two buses with the air conditioning on and the windows closed, one of the buses had a COVID-19 patient. The study revealed that most of the passengers who contracted COVID-19 and fell sick came from the same bus as the COVID-19 patients, even though all the participants had previously joined and gathered together.
The study concluded, in this case, the main transmission occurs while on the bus, namely the transmission of COVID-19 through the air. Furthermore, some bus passengers who later showed symptoms of COVID-19 were also known to have not sat near the infected passengers.
“Understanding the route of transmission of COVID-19 is essential to contain the pandemic, so that effective prevention strategies can be developed targeting all potential routes of transmission,” said Shen.
“Our findings provide strong support for wearing a face covering in a closed environment with poor ventilation,” he concluded.
