Chile this Saturday surpassed 39,000 deaths from the COVID-19 adding 29 new deaths and at a time when the pandemic has stabilized for weeks and a large part of the target population has already received their booster dose.
The health authorities of Chile reported that in the last 24 hours the total deaths since the start of the pandemic reached 39,013 and those infected 1.79 million, after detecting 1,511 new cases.
“We must take care of the progress we have and for that it is very important that we maintain self-care measures,” said the Chilean Minister of Health, Enrique Paris.
The pandemic, which had its most serious peak between last March and June and forced 90% of the population to be confined once again, has been under control for more than three months, with a positivity rate that does not exceed 3%.
“The variation of new confirmed cases at the national level is -8% and -26% for the comparison of seven and 14 days, respectively,” Paris added in a statement.
BOOSTER VACCINE
Chile has deployed one of the most successful vaccination strategies in the world, which reaches 91% of the target population with two doses, mostly with the Chinese Sinovac vaccine, but also Pfizer, AstraZeneca and CanSino.
To date, 10.2 million booster doses have also been administered, but there are more than 1.5 million laggards who could have and have not.
With the aim of stopping the spread of the virus, starting next January 1, everyone over 18 years of age will be required to receive the third dose in order to use their vaccination card, a government pass that allows events with greater capacity and to be attended in the interior of bars and restaurants.
Authorities announced this week that from the second half of February they will begin to apply the fourth dose of the vaccine.
