Covid-19 Cases Skyrocket, Singapore Lockdown Again

Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – The Singapore government decided to re-impose strict lockdown measures after cases of corona infection in the Lion Country increased significantly. This restriction will take effect from Thursday, (22/7/2021) until 18 August.

Data from the Ministry of Health showed there were 480 community cases that occurred in the Asian financial center. This figure jumped significantly from 19 cases reported a week earlier.

“This is of great concern, as it could affect many people in our community across the island,” Singapore’s Ministry of Health said in a statement as quoted by CNBC International, Tuesday (20/7/2021).

“As we continue to conduct extensive testing for individuals exposed to risk of infection, we can expect the number of cases to increase in the coming days,” he added.

One of the new lockdown rules is limiting the maximum number of people allowed to gather from 5 people to just 2 people. Then there will be a ban on eating in and exercising in the indoor space.

Singaporean authorities have found several clusters that are causing this significant increase. The largest cluster was associated with a karaoke lounge, which accounted for 120 cases.

Nightclubs, bars and KTV or karaoke TV rooms have been banned from operating in Singapore since last year due to the coronavirus pandemic. This business is considered a high risk of spreading the virus because on-site activities sometimes involve customers socializing with lady companions and consuming alcoholic beverages.

Singapore is one of the countries that has been quite successful in controlling the Covid-19 pandemic. Since the pandemic hit, Singapore has only recorded 63,245 cases of Covid-19. This figure is accompanied by 36 deaths.

This makes the country’s government think about preparing its population so that they can face Covid-19 as part of everyday life. Later on, corona infections will be treated like the common cold and the focus of reporting on Covid will only be focused on infected patients receiving treatment. In addition, there will be certain easing for residents who have been vaccinated.
