London, English – New cases of Covid-19 in the UK have drastically increased due to variants Omicron. Some UK hospitals, particularly in London, are struggling to maintain medical services as many staff have to undergo Covid-19 isolation, a senior doctor said on Thursday.
“The real acute problem is staffing,” Katherine Henderson, an emergency care consultant in London and President of the Royal College of Emergency Medicine, told BBC Radio.
“Even if we haven’t seen a huge increase in the number of people being treated, we are already feeling the effects of a shortage of staff to work properly and safely. So we are worried that patients will come in because we don’t have enough staff,” he said.
Henderson said hospitals in London were the hardest hit.
“We estimate that maybe around 10 percent of the staff, namely doctors and nurses, will have to take time off,” he said, adding.
