COVID-19 cases detected in athletes in Olympic Village

Two athletes installed in the Olympic Village tested positive for COVID-19, the first to do so before the Tokyo Games, which begin on Friday.

Organizers confirmed the positives on Sunday, noting that those infected were not Japanese. Their names or other details were not released.

Another athlete had tested positive, although he did not reside in the Olympic Village, organizers said. That person was also identified as “non-Japanese.”

In addition, a positive was reported in a member of the International Olympic Committee, detected on Saturday in a test upon arrival at Tokyo airport.

The International Olympic Committee confirmed the test and identified the patient as Ryu Seung-min from South Korea. He won a gold medal in table tennis at the 2004 Games.

He was isolated and showed no symptoms, according to reports.

Since July 1, 55 people linked to the games have tested positive for diagnostic tests.

The Games begin on Friday in a region under a state of emergency. Tokyo reported 1,410 new cases of COVID-19 on Saturday, the highest number in six months. It was the 28th day in a row with more new cases than seven days before.
