(COVID-19) Brazil reports 54,742 new infections – Xinhua English.news.cn

SAO PAULO, Feb.11 (Xinhua) – Brazil has recorded 54,742 novel coronavirus infections and 1,351 deaths in the past 24 hours, bringing the respective totals to 9,713,909 and 236,201, the health ministry said Thursday.

With these new records, the South American country recorded its 22nd consecutive day with more than 1,000 daily deaths, returning to the worst figures of the first epidemic phase between May and July 2020.

Health Minister Eduardo Pazuello told a Senate committee that the variant detected in the Amazon was three times more contagious than the previous ones.

At the same time, more than 4.7 million people have been vaccinated since January 17 with CoronaVac, a vaccine developed by the Chinese pharmaceutical company Sinovac in collaboration with the Butantan Institute in Sao Paulo, and with the vaccine developed by the Swedish group -British AstraZeneca and the University of Oxford.

Brazil is the second country in the world with the most deaths from COVID-19 behind the United States and the third country by number of cases behind the United States and India.
