According to data from the Brazilian Ministry of Health, the number of deaths caused by covid-19 amounts to 373,335, with 13,943,071 cases of the disease having been registered since February 26, 2020, when the first case was registered in the country.
Although the number of deaths today fell for the first time in seven days to less than 2,000, the Ministry of Health itself clarified that the daily balance sheet of the evolution of the pandemic at the weekend does not reflect reality, since these days there are delays in data notification.
Today’s bulletin on epidemiological developments released by health authorities also indicates that a total of 1,178,137 patients are under observation, which confirms, according to the EFE agency, that the pandemic is not under control in the country.
The situation in Brazil has worsened in recent weeks, mainly due to the circulation throughout the national territory of new variants of the more aggressive coronavirus, which have brought hospitals to the verge of collapse and the shortage of drugs to treat ventilated patients.
Against this backdrop, experts predict that, in the coming weeks, Brazil will surpass 400,000 deaths since the beginning of the pandemic, doubling, in the first five months of this year, the approximately 200,000 deaths recorded in 2020.
