In 24 hours, the South American country registered 56,648 cases and 1,171 deaths caused by the new coronavirus.
The Brazilian Government also pointed out that 6,963,407 infected people have already recovered from the disease, while 649,261 infected patients are under medical supervision.
The figures confirm the South American country, with its 210 million inhabitants, as one of the global epicenters of the pandemic.
Brazil is the second in number of deaths caused by covid-19 in the world, behind the United States (353,131 deaths), and the third in number of cases, behind the United States, which has more than 20.7 million infected, and India, with 10.3 million infected.
The Brazilian government confirmed on Tuesday that it is negotiating the purchase of two million doses of the Oxford vaccine against covid-19 manufactured in India, stressing that there is no ban on the export of immunizers produced by Indian pharmaceutical companies.
“Negotiations between the Oswaldo Cruz Foundation (Fiocruz) and the Serum Institute of India for the import into Brazil of the initial quantity of doses of immunizers against covid-19 are at an advanced stage, with a probable delivery date in mid-January ”, Said a note from the Ministries of Health and Foreign Affairs of Brazil.
The country has not approved the application of any vaccine against covid-19 and has recently stepped up its efforts to buy vaccines and start a mass immunization plan with no set date.
This Tuesday, the Brazilian city of Manaus, located in the Amazon region, declared a state of emergency for 180 days due to an increase in cases of covid-19 that left its health system on the verge of collapse.
Manaus has about 2.2 million inhabitants and has recorded about 3,478 deaths since the beginning of the pandemic.
