The number of Covid-19 infections, as well as hospitalizations and deaths of Covid-19 patients, is growing rapidly in the United States. Authorities have indicated that in most cases people have not been vaccinated against Covid-19. For his part, US President Joe Biden has said that misinformation about Covid-19 and vaccines spread on social networks is responsible for the deaths of many people.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said on Friday that the number of new Covid-19 infections in the country has risen by about 70% in a week. In turn, the number of hospitalized Covid-19 patients has increased by 36% over a seven-day period. Meanwhile, the number of deaths from complications caused by the virus has risen by 26%, although it had fallen for several weeks before.
Covid-19 delta variants
The increase in the incidence of Covid-19 in the United States is due to the rapid spread of the delta variant of the virus. This highly contagious variant is associated with more than 80% of new infections.
The number of new Covid-19 infections and viral deaths in the United States is still many times lower than last winter, but for the first time since winter, Covid-19 morbidity and mortality rates are rising in all 50 states.
Rosena Valenskaya, director of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, said 97% of Covid-19 patients currently hospitalized have not been vaccinated against the dangerous virus.
“There is a clear message: it is becoming a pandemic for unvaccinated people. We are seeing an increase in infections in those parts of the country where vaccination coverage is low, as unvaccinated people are at higher risk. “We are most concerned about the fact that we will continue to record preventable infections, hospitalizations and, unfortunately, deaths among the unvaccinated population,” Valenska said.
Low vaccination rate
Vaccination rates remain low in the United States. Currently, only about 48% of American adults are fully vaccinated against Covid-19, according to the Associated Press.
U.S. President Joe Biden had set a goal of having at least 70% of American adults receive at least one dose of Covid-19 by July 4, and by July 15, less than 68% of adults had received it. If the current grafting rate is maintained, then Baiden’s goal will not be achieved even by the end of the month.
The White House blames Facebook and other popular social networks for their unsatisfactory vaccination rates, as they are not doing enough to combat misinformation about Covid-19 vaccines.
On Friday, Biden answered harshly the journalist’s question about the responsibility of social networks in spreading the messages of so-called antivaksax.
“They are killing people. The only pandemic with us is among the unvaccinated population. And they are killing people,” the president said.
Facebook rejected Biden’s statement and said the social network’s efforts to spread the truth about Covid-19 vaccines actually save lives.
