Covid-19 Antibodies Drops Within 3 Months, There Is A Risk Of Reinfection

Suara.com – A new study shows immunity to corona virus can go down for several months. This is known from the results blood test more than 365 thousand people in the UK from late June to September.

This blood test is part of the Imperial College London Real-time Assessment of Community Transmission (REACT) study, whose results were published on Wednesday (28/10/2020), but not yet. peer-review.

This blood test is done to test antibody corona virus. The results revealed a drop from nearly six percent to 4.4 percent over the three-month span, meaning the number of people who had antibodies decreased by 26.5 percent.

If someone tests positive for antibodies, it means they have been infected, reports Fox News.

“Our study shows that over time there is a decrease in the proportion of people who are positive for coronavirus antibodies. It is not clear what levels these antibodies provide, or for how long this immunity lasts,” said Paul Elliott, study author and professor at Imperial College London.

The study tests for IgG antibodies, detectable antibodies. When the virus attacks, the body first produces IgM antibodies, which indicate an active or recent infection. Then, the body develops IgG.

The largest decrease in antibody prevalence occurred in the oldest age group, namely 75 years and over (39 percent). Meanwhile, the young age group experienced the lowest decline, namely 15 percent.

According to a university press release, these findings suggest a possible decrease in immunity in the population and an increased risk of reinfection as detectable antibodies decrease.
