COVID-19 and misinformation: Facebook responds to Joe Biden

An unexpected controversy has arisen between the president of the United States, Joe Biden and Facebook, after the president affirmed that the social network “is killing people” by allowing the dissemination of disinformation about COVID-19.

Faced with this accusation, the platform responded and published a series of data that shows who are responsible for the slowdown in vaccination rates and the increase in cases of infections.

“The data shows that 85 percent of Facebook users in the United States have been vaccinated or want to be vaccinated against Covid-19,” the company said in a post on its corporate blog signed by Vice President Guy Rosen.

“President Biden’s goal was for 70 percent of Americans to be vaccinated by July 4. Facebook is not the reason this goal was missed. “

The company also communicated its efforts both to promote accurate claims and to fight false claims, including the use of misinformation labels, reduced exposure, and takedowns.

He also used Canada and the United Kingdom as examples, which have higher vaccination rates despite using the social network almost as much as US users.

According to health authorities, infections in the United States increased by 70 percent on Friday, July 16, compared to the previous week, especially with outbreaks that are registered in localities with the lowest vaccination rates.

In this same period, meanwhile, deaths have shot up 26 percent.
