Covid-19 and Influenza: Vaccination and Updates in Aruba

From our correspondent
Oranjestad – Covid-19 is still claiming lives in Aruba. People also die from the flu virus. A team from the Department of Public Health (DVG) visits nursing homes to vaccinate residents. Patients who fall into a risk group are also eligible for the free vaccination.

When the Covid pandemic was officially over, DVG stopped publishing weekly figures on the number of people who died from corona. The number of flu deaths is also not published. However, DVG now announces that eighteen people died from influenza in Aruba between 1999 and 2021. The hospital is still admitting patients with Covid and there are also people who die from the consequences of corona. Of all patients, 83 percent are older than 65.

The government is tackling corona and flu by continuing to vaccinate and asks for the cooperation of the population. Family of residents of nursing homes are urgently asked to ask the nursing home about the possibility of their family member being vaccinated against flu and Covid.

The risk groups that are eligible for the free vaccinations are also people aged 60 and over, people between the ages of 18 and 59 who are advised by the doctor to be vaccinated, people with a BMI over 40 (overweight, ed.) and persons with mental disabilities. Healthcare providers who come into direct contact with patients also fall into the risk group.

Another group is urgently advised to take the vaccinations. These are people with high blood pressure and women who are in the second trimester of their pregnancy.
