Covid-19: 15 elderly people died at the Misericórdia home in Aveiro | Coronavirus

The Mayor of Aveiro, Ribau Esteves, confirmed this Monday that 15 elderly people from the Santa Casa da Misericórdia home died after contracting the covid-19.

The mayor said that of the 105 users of the home located in the Social Complex of Moita, in Oliveirinha, 77 were positive for covid-19, in the screening tests that were completed last week. There are also 22 employees who are also infected and eight who have had a negative result.

This case is, so far, the most serious recorded in the municipality, but the president says that the institution has taken all the necessary measures, with the creation of “a positive wing, with autonomous teams and circuits”.

The mayor also left a “wake-up call”, stating that there are households waiting for covid-19 screening tests to be carried out that were planned and that it was not possible to carry out because there are no swabs to collect samples to go to the laboratory.

“What the lady director-general for health said today at the press conference, that there was no lack of tests where they were needed, is linearly false. In Aveiro there are no swabs. THE “stock”From our hospital broke down and the lorry that is about to arrive, makes Thursday 15 days and was absolutely guaranteed that it would arrive this weekend, it did not arrive ”, said the mayor.

The mayor made a “desperate” appeal for a portion of the 80,000 swabs that the Government announced would be distributed “to come here urgently”, because “Aveiro is one of the municipalities and one of the regions in the country with the highest incidence”.

In Portugal, according to the balance made this Monday by the Directorate-General for Health, there were 311 deaths, 16 more than the day before, 11,730 cases of confirmed infections, which represents an increase of 452 over Sunday.
