The story of the golden brooch that appraiser Jeroen Zoetmulder (50) recently picked up on the free market in Bakkum has taken a new turn.

On King’s Day, Zoetmulder bought the brooch for 1.50 euros, knowing that the piece of jewelry is worth many times over. A reporter from this paper walked with him and wrote about it, after which the appraiser received critical comments from readers who felt that he would abuse his expertise.

Shortly afterwards Kim van Leeuwen, the seller of the brooch, also let her know in the hope that something could be arranged: the one and a half euros she had received and the 250 euros that the brooch is worth, did not sit well with her.

Sporty

Zoetmulder showed himself sporty and proposed to share the proceeds. What he couldn’t see coming was that the Amsterdam buyer who came forward is a cousin of the previous owner Kim van Leeuwen. “It’s a family heirloom,” he said, “I’d like to buy it back.” And given the estimated value, he was also willing to pay that amount for it. “I think it’s a nice gesture that the brooch stays in the family in this way.”

The transfer will take place next week in Amsterdam. Earlier, a trader from the United States also showed interest in the brooch.
