The court will consider the extension of Bretly D’s pre-trial detention on Tuesday. He is suspected of involvement in the death of a Rotterdam psychiatrist and a stabbing incident in Zutphen.
The court can extend his pre-trial detention by a maximum of ninety days. After the possible extension, a first public hearing will follow.
Sixty-year-old psychiatrist Jean van Griensven was found seriously injured in his home on Handelsplein on October 13 after a brief fire. He had been shot and died on the spot from his injuries.
On the night of October 20 to 21, D. probably stabbed a 32-year-old man from Zutphen during an argument that got out of hand. Because the victim managed to escape, he suffered only minor injuries, according to police.
The police published a photo and the full name of 24-year-old D the same day. During the search for the firearms-threatening suspect, the police received hundreds of tips. D. was arrested on Wednesday morning, October 25, at a hotel on the Prins Hendrikkade in Amsterdam.
D. was released on conditions
The Rotterdam court decided in July that D. could await a case in freedom under certain conditions. In that case he is prosecuted for three crimes: threatening, attempted serious assault and theft of a driver’s license. He allegedly stabbed and cut his victim in the face with a razor blade and hit him in the face.
The suspect stabbed a man in The Hague in 2014, at the age of fifteen. Shortly before, the teenager had had sex with him. In 2015, D. misbehaved in institutions where he was staying at the time. The court imposed a juvenile TBS order on him.
