Court suspends prison sentence against Swedish computer scientist convicted in Ecuador

Quito. An Ecuadorian court accepted this Monday the request of the defense of the Swedish programmer, Ola Bini, to suspend the one-year prison sentence that was handed down to him days ago as guilty of the crime of non-consensual entry into a government computer system.

The Attorney General’s Office reported on the social network

In addition, he must have a specific address, “exercise a job, profession or trade” and must not reoffend or be prosecuted for another reason, he added.

Bini had been declared innocent in a first instance ruling in 2023, but after the prosecution’s appeal, the court reversed that decision and found him “attempted” guilty.

The sentence established one year of deprivation of liberty and the payment of a fine of $1,840.

Bini, considered a close friend of Australian Julian Assange, was arrested in 2019 and released after 70 days with a writ of habeas corpus.

“It is not an acceptance of responsibility,” it is a legal resource to prevent Bini from going to prison, his lawyer, Carlos Soria, explained to The Associated Press on Monday. He announced that they will appeal the guilty verdict and continue the process until they obtain “innocence.”
