It was just a small mistake, but a cleaning lady from Vaterstetten (Bavaria) has to pay dearly: Because she washed a lawyer’s expensive cashmere blanket too hot in 2018, she had to pay the man 1,500 euros in damages. The judge advised her in the civil process at the Ebersberg district court to make the comparison, as reported by “Merkur”. Otherwise she faces a conviction.

Tragic for the woman from Slovenia: It wasn’t just any blanket that shrank because the washing temperature was too high, but a cashmere blanket from the French luxury brand Hermès. Large, gray and with a horse motif.
The lawyer from Baldham demanded damages of 2,524 euros – some previously charged amounts had already been deducted, according to “Merkur”. And met with open ears from the judge. You have to pay for damage to someone else’s property, she explained.
Attorney brought damaged ceiling to trial
The plaintiff represented himself in court and offered a settlement of 2,000 euros. “We can’t pay for that,” said the cleaning lady, who appeared at the hearing without a lawyer. She is currently unable to work due to a foot injury, her husband is on short-time work.
In order to show the extent of the damage, the lawyer brought two blankets with him to the hearing: the one that had run in and a comparative piece that he had bought for 3,100 euros. According to the report, he is a big horse lover and that is why the blanket is so important to him.

Ultimately, the plaintiff agreed to a settlement of 1,500 euros, which the cleaning lady had to pay by the end of September – otherwise 2,000 euros would be due. The judge did not accept her argument that the blanket was older and therefore not worth as much: On the vintage market, luxury items are certainly traded at very high prices. (bst)
