The Rio de Janeiro Court decided, in the second instance, that the actress Cacau Protásio should be compensated R$80,000 for being the victim of racist attacks during a film recording at a fire station in the center of Rio. The episode took place in November 2019.

At the time, Cacau was recording the film “Together and Tangled”. Videos and audios released on social media subsequently showed firefighters complaining about the recording and making racist and fat-phobic comments against Cacau. With the case going viral, the Fire Department said it did not condone discriminatory acts against Cacau or anyone else.

In the first instance, the Government of the State of Rio was ordered to compensate the actress with R$30,000. Both Cacau and the government appealed. The case’s rapporteur, judge Ana Cristina Nacif Dib Miguel, increased the amount, saying that the amount takes into account that the State is responsible for the actions of its employees, in addition to also considering the seriousness of the offenses and the repercussion of the case.

At the time, Cacau said that the recordings were authorized and a responsible firefighter accompanied the team. She said she didn’t have any problems that day and that everyone treated her well, but when she got home she started receiving videos and audios that were circulating talking about the cast and her.

The Fire Department says in the process that it identified two agents who made the video making prejudiced comments and that both were punished. One of them recorded and shared images. He was detained for three days. The second, who recorded and shared audios, was detained for ten days.
