Court orders release of migrant children to protect them from Covid

A court of The Angels ordered the US immigration authorities to release more than 100 migrant children detained in three detention centers to avoid them
catch the coronavirus. Two of the three centers have confirmed cases of the virus, and could become major sources of contamination.

These family centers “are on fire, and the time is no longer for half measures,” wrote district court judge Dolly Gee in her decision released on Friday. The 124 children detained in these centers must therefore either be returned to their parents or placed in foster families with the parents’ approval by July 17, she ordered.

Trump’s cuts rejected

The “zero tolerance” policy towards illegal immigration launched in 2018 by the président Donald Trump saw thousands of children
separated from their parents at the border, a practice apparently intended to deter potential migrants, before the government backtracked.

Furthermore, last week, the Supreme Court of United States rejected Donald Trump’s decision to cut a program to protect the estimated 700,000 illegal immigrants who arrived in the United States as children. Currently, there are more than 2,500 cases of Covid-19 in all immigration detention centers, the CNN television station said on Friday.
