Court of Auditors criticized: Land is not spending enough money in over-aged state roads

The fact that the Burgenland State Audit Office (BLRH) urgently advises the state government to spend more money does not happen every day. In the latest BLRH report on road maintenance, the auditors recommend that the state “(to) increase the annual maintenance funds” in order to “sustainably improve the state of the state road network”.

The Court of Auditors scrutinized the structural maintenance of the approximately 1,800-kilometer state road network between 2017 and 2020. State roads make up around 17 percent of Burgenland’s traffic routes, more than 81 percent are local roads, and the small remainder are motorways and expressways.

Structural preservation means maintenance and renewal. Winter service and cleaning, on the other hand, are part of operational maintenance, which was not part of the test.
