Court denies habeas corpus to Jorge Glas – 2024-04-18 17:29:55

An Ecuadorian court denied habeas corpus to the former vice president Jorge Glaswho is detained in jail The rock of Guayaquil.

The former official was arrested on April 5 at the Mexican embassy in Quitowhere he had taken refuge since December 2023. The Ecuadorian authorities broke into the diplomatic building to prevent the former vice president from escaping the country, as he had received asylum from the Mexican president Andrés Manuel López Obrador. This act resulted in a diplomatic crisis and international condemnation against the actions of the Government of Daniel Noboa.

Jorge Glas maintains that he is politically persecuted and that he is a victim of arbitrary judicial processes. The former vice president is also being investigated in the case ‘Reconstruction of Manabí’which investigates alleged misappropriation of public funds.
