In March 2021, Audi issued a guideline – the guidelines “for better visibility of gender diversity” – with the requirement to address employees in gender-sensitive language. A dedicated intranet site was also created. When it comes to language, Audi acts in a gender-sensitive manner, for example with the so-called “gender gap”. The male and female forms are connected with an underscore: “Audianner_innen”. However, simple neutral formulations can also be used, such as “manager” instead of “boss,” they say. At the time, the carmaker emphasized that in the future, gender-sensitive formulations would be necessary in all internal and external letters from the company. Audi is a member of the “Charta of diversity”, which uses the underscore notation. Their goal: “To advance the recognition, appreciation and inclusion of diversity in the working world in Germany.”

Decision important for other companies
As a kind of test case, a decision in the Audi case could also have consequences for many other companies. After all, the question of gender concerns many people. In the end, the case could even have to be decided by the Federal Court of Justice.
