Couple Sentenced for Starting Massive El Dorado Fire with Gender-Reveal Pyrotechnics
In a tragic turn of events, a couple’s innocent celebration turned into a devastating disaster. The pair, whose gender-reveal party took a dangerous turn, has been sentenced after reaching a plea deal with prosecutors. The El Dorado fire, as it came to be known, ravaged San Bernardino County in 2020, leaving destruction and loss in its wake.
It all began on a scorching hot day in a Yucaipa park when the couple ignited a device intended to emit blue or pink smoke, revealing the gender of their unborn child. Little did they know that this seemingly harmless act would lead to such catastrophic consequences. The pyrotechnics sparked a fire that quickly spread, eventually consuming more than 22,000 acres of land.
Tragically, the blaze claimed the life of Charles Morton, a dedicated wildland firefighter with the U.S. Forest Service. Two other firefighters were injured, along with 13 other individuals. In addition to the human toll, the fire also destroyed five homes and forced hundreds of residents to evacuate.
In light of these devastating outcomes, Refugio Manuel Jimenez Jr. and Angelina Jimenez have faced the consequences of their actions. Refugio Manuel Jimenez Jr., who pleaded guilty to a felony count of involuntary manslaughter in Morton’s death and two felony counts of recklessly causing fire to an inhabited structure, has been sentenced to a year in county jail, two years of felony probation, and community service. Angelina Jimenez, on the other hand, pleaded guilty to three misdemeanor counts of recklessly causing a fire to another’s property. She has been sentenced to a year of summary probation and community service.
The couple has also been ordered to pay victims’ restitution in the amount of $1,789,972. While this monetary compensation can never fully heal the wounds inflicted by the fire, it is hoped that it will provide some assistance to those who lost their homes and cherished belongings.
San Bernardino County District Attorney Jason Anderson acknowledged that resolving the case was never going to be a win. He expressed his understanding of the immeasurable loss suffered by the victims, emphasizing that no amount of restitution can replace the intangible treasures that were destroyed. Anderson hopes that this resolution will bring closure to the painful chapter in the victims’ lives and assist them in their journey towards rebuilding and healing.
