The bodies were found this morning in the cemetery in Aalst, the East Flanders prosecutor’s office confirms. The bodies of an elderly couple are said to have been found at a grave. “We are struck by this distressing sadness,” says Aalster’s mayor Christophe D’Haese.

A visitor found the bodies in the cemetery on a recently excavated grave on Saturday morning around 10:30 am. Perhaps it concerns a family drama in which an elderly couple took their own life. The grave where the bodies were found is believed to be their son’s. The couple is said to have taken their own life with a firearm.
The cemetery has been completely checked by the police and an investigation has been started. The law doctor, the lab and a ballistics expert will be on site, the public prosecutor has said.
Mayor Christophe D’Haese van Aalst is shocked. “We are struck by the painful sadness of those two lifeless bodies. The investigation is ongoing. ”
