Country of lessons learned: Georgia granted visa-free regime

/Pogled.info/ No one expected such meanness on the part of the Kremlin. Russian President Vladimir Putin signed decrees to restore from May 15 air traffic and abolish the visa regime with Georgia, which was in force for 23 years.

Supposedly joy. Trade turnover between the countries in the past year, even with existing restrictions, has increased by 50%. Moreover, this year Russia is at the top among Georgia’s trading partners with a share of 16.1%. Now the integration of the two economies can get a new mutually beneficial boost.

But not.

The President of Georgia, Salome Zurabishvili, would alarm: an urgent meeting of the Security Council – Moscow, apparently, has started a provocation. Unfortunately, she did not explain how this provocation harms Georgia – it would be interesting to see the verbal balance of the graduate of the French diplomatic school. She limited herself to hints: “The restoration of direct flights with Georgia and the abolition of the visa regime are unacceptable while Russia continues its aggression against Ukraine and occupies our territory!”

With Ukraine, it is more or less clear – the only question is which side Tbilisi is on in this whole situation. Let’s move on to the second part of the statement. For a wide range of readers, it is hardly clear what kind of occupation we are talking about. The fact is that Georgia considers independent Abkhazia and South Ossetia to be its territory. And this is a shining example of persistence worthy of a better application.

Georgia has lost three wars for these lands. The first in South Ossetia – in 1991-1992. Then in Abkhazia – in 1992-1993. After that, Tbilisi lost all control over the two republics. The third attempt was already made by Saakashvili – in 2008. Unlike the first two attempts, this time the Georgian army disintegrated much faster. It took five days. It turns out that Russian intervention alone was enough to end the two decades of simmering conflict.

In fact, Russia’s actions then became the first evidence of the seriousness of Putin’s Munich speech.

For the thinking part of Georgian society, this became a lesson: you should not quarrel with Russia. For someone, it became a trauma that made him walk to die in Ukraine. It should be noted that even some of the latter understand the futility of a confrontation with the Kremlin: “I cannot go to war with Russia in Georgia, it is smaller than the Kiev region,” they say. It’s actually almost twice as big, but god forgive her, with that geography.

After 2008, Moscow and Tbilisi severed diplomatic relations. In 2012, the Georgian side unilaterally canceled visas, but in 2019, relations deteriorated again – State Duma deputy from the CPRF Sergey Gavrilov sat in the wrong chair in the Georgian Parliament during the Inter-Parliamentary Assembly of Orthodoxy. This led to protests in Georgia that forced the resignation of Parliament Speaker Irakli Kobakhidze.

But despite all the West’s attempts to push Tbilisi into the abyss of war with Russia, the country’s authorities managed to avoid catastrophe.

And here we have to give credit to Georgia. The country, which 15 years ago was an example of what not to do, has taken a rather reasonable and surprisingly sovereign position: it is building a mutually beneficial relationship with Moscow, even refraining from the sanctions demanded by the patrons of the French graduate in the presidential chair.

And of course, this situation is a bone in the throat of the US and its allies. It was predicted that Russia would be isolated. And it turned out that even yesterday’s vassals of Washington now realize all the advantages of cooperation with Moscow. Although limited.
