Country in Europe abolishes time change

Many Germans have long wanted an end to the time change. Now a country in the EU has abolished it.

From March 2025, Ukraine will permanently abolish the time change and move to permanent winter time. The final change to daylight saving time will take place on March 30, 2025. This measure is being taken for both health and safety reasons.

Health benefits and the stabilization of the population’s biorhythm were decisive for this decision, reports the “Merkur”. Ukraine justifies this by saying that after changing the hour hands, citizens feel worse and their ability to work decreases. Politically speaking, Ukraine wants to use this measure to achieve greater separation from Russia.

Many other countries such as Brazil, Turkey and Namibia have already abolished the time change.

The discussion about abolishing the time change has also been an issue in the EU for years. Back in 2018, 84 percent of Europeans voted to abolish the time change. The EU Commission proposed ending seasonal time changes, and the European Parliament supported this proposal in 2019. However, since then, member states have not found a consistent position.

One reason for the stall is the necessary coordination between neighboring countries to avoid different time zones. Currently, the proposal to abolish the time change is not on the Council agenda under the Hungarian Presidency.

On Sunday, October 27, 2024, the clocks will be set back one hour overnight. Instead of 3 a.m. it’s 2 a.m. again, which allows for an hour more sleep. Modern devices adjust the time automatically, while analog clocks have to be changed manually.

The time change has both supporters and opponents. Summertime offers longer evenings, which increases the quality of life and opportunities for leisure activities and supports trade and gastronomy. More sunlight in the evening can combat depression.

On the other hand, daylight saving time has not produced any demonstrable energy savings, students have to go to school longer in the dark, and the long daylight hours can be disruptive if you have to go to bed early. Winter time is considered healthier because it is more in line with our internal clock.
