Country group The Dixie Chicks removes controversial term Dixie from name

The American country group Dixie Chicks is now called The Chicks. The three band members have deleted the word ‘Dixie’ because it has a link with the American slavery past. The term refers to the southern states of the United States, which united in the Confederacy during the American Civil War (1861-1865), fought against the abolition of slavery.

The female country trio has been commenting on the use of the term Dixie for years, but because of the flared discussion on racism in the US it has now been decided to change the name.

Along with the name change announcement, The Chicks also presents a music video for their new single March March, featuring recent footage from the US demonstrations against racism:
