Country Admits 12 Serious Human Rights Violations, Members of DPR Call the Government Must Reveal the Truth

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – Member of the House of Representatives Legal Commission of the NasDem Party Fraction Taufik Basari said the state’s recognition of the occurrence of 12 gross human rights violations is a stepping stone to resolve gross human rights violations and fulfill the rights of victims. He said this acknowledgment must be followed by a feeling of deep regret for the mistakes the state made in the past.

According to Taufik, this confession opens the door for the next steps, namely revealing the truth, investigating the perpetrators and enforcing the law, to identify victims and restore and fulfill their rights.

On the other hand, Taufik said this confession was an opportunity to evaluate and reform policies, laws and institutions to prevent similar incidents from happening again.

“This state acknowledgment is an important event in the life of the nation because the state has acknowledged mistakes in the past which have become a dark record in the history of the nation’s life,” said Taufik in a statement, Thursday, January 12, 2023.

According to him, the public needs to collect the state’s obligations in the form of these follow-up steps. He hopes that as much as possible this obligation can be paid off during the reign of President Joko Widodo alias Jokowi.

The reason, he said, was that the resolution of past gross human rights violations had been Jokowi’s political promise since 2014. The remaining efforts, according to Taufik, must be followed up when the government changes after 2024.

“In the near future I hope the government will have follow-up programs in a systematic, measurable, realistic and comprehensive manner, including in terms of budgeting in the future state budget,” he said.

Taufik explained that victims and the public have the right to know what really happened. Therefore, he said, with this acknowledgment the government should ensure that the facts about the events that occurred could be revealed.
