London/Hong Kong – Burger giant McDonald’s experiences widespread system failure

McDonald’s, the international fast-food chain, faced a significant setback recently as its technological system experienced a malfunction, leading to the temporary closure of stores and severe disruptions in countries worldwide such as Australia, Japan, Hong Kong, and the United Kingdom.

Issue being resolved

The fast-food behemoth issued a statement on Friday, informing the public that they were aware of the system outage, which had a profound impact on their restaurants. A McDonald’s spokesperson stated, “We are aware of a technology outage, which impacted our restaurants; the issue is now being resolved.” The company expressed gratitude for their customers’ patience and offered sincere apologies for any inconvenience caused. It is important to note that the issue is not related to a cybersecurity event.

Extent of the outage

McDonald’s Japan updated its customers via a message posted on their website, stating that many stores across the nation had temporarily suspended operations due to the lingering system failure.

McDonald’s restaurants in the United Kingdom were not spared either, as customers faced a system outage between 6 a.m. and 7 a.m. local time, during which they had to place orders in-person and relay instructions to kitchen staff.

Additionally, Australian restaurants were affected by the outage, according to a spokesperson from McDonald’s Australia. Similar issues were also reported in Hong Kong and Taiwan, creating a global disruption within the fast-food chain.

Technology failure impacts McDonald’s Taiwan and Hong Kong operations

McDonald’s Hong Kong shared on its Facebook page, “Due to a computer system failure, the mobile ordering and self-ordering kiosks are not functioning. Please order directly at the restaurant counter.”

Similarly, in Taiwan, McDonald’s highlighted that their McDelivery service, along with their online and telephone ordering services, were temporarily suspended. McDonald’s Taiwan, via Taiwanese broadcaster TVBS, assured customers that they were actively investigating and rectifying the issue.

McDonald’s and its international reach

Out of the afflicted countries, Japan boasts the largest number of McDonald’s stores, nearly 3,000 in total. Following Japan is the United Kingdom, with around 1,500 restaurants, and Australia with just over 1,000 locations.

This is a developing story and will be constantly updated.
