Georgia is one of the countries that has experienced conflict with Russia. The conflict between these two countries began in the early 1990s, when Russia and Georgia had just become independent countries after the breakup of the Soviet Union.

However, Georgia is engulfed in civil war, with the provinces of South Ossetia and the provinces of Abkhazia vying to declare their independence. History.

In the late 1990s, the European Union and the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) expanded their influence in Eastern and Central Europe.

Georgia moved further west, even joining the US-led coalition that fought in the Iraq War in 2003. This process escalated after the election of pro-Western President Mikheil Saakashvili in 2004.

“Georgia has clearly started the process of trying to get out of Russia’s sphere of influence,” said Mark Galeotti, expert on modern Russian history and security affairs.

“That (Russia) needs to maintain its influence, and if it releases Georgia, who else will follow next?” continued Galeotti.

Citing the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS), NATO’s expansion in the region was interpreted by Russian President Vladimir Putin as a hostile act aimed at besieging and weakening Russia.

Russia then decided to invade Georgian territory, taking advantage of the civil conflict that occurred.
