What is yellow fever?
The World Health Organization (WHO) points out that yellow fever is an acute viral disease that is transmitted by infected mosquitoes. The term “yellow” refers to jaundice (yellow skin, mucous membranes and eyes) that some patients present.
The most common symptoms of yellow fever are: fever, headaches (recurring headaches), jaundice, muscle aches, nausea, vomiting, and tiredness. The world medical organization highlights that a small part of infected patients may present severe symptoms, and approximately half of these cases die within 7 to 10 days.
What are the symptoms of yellow fever?
The Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) It stands out that the symptoms appear between 3 and 6 days after the bite of an infected mosquito.
In the first phase there may be fever, muscle pain and headache, chills, loss of appetite and nausea or vomiting. Fortunately, most of the time these symptoms disappear after 3 to 4 days.
But travelers who enter the second phase of the contagion suffer from high fever and various body systems are affected. Renal (kidney) function deteriorates. According to the health institution, half of the patients who enter this toxic phase die within 10 to 14 days, but the rest recover without significant organic damage.
The vaccine is the most important preventive measure and it is safe, providing effective immunity within 30 days for 99 percent of people. A single dose is enough to acquire sustained immunity and lifelong protection against the disease.
