Countdown for direct flight from New York

The countdown is on: In three days, the first direct flight from New York City will land at Palma de Mallorca Airport. Mallorca’s island council is therefore planning to hold a welcome event at the airport on Friday from 9.30 a.m., in which, among others, island council president Catalina Cladera and tourism director Andreu Serra are to take part.

If all goes according to plan, United flight UA236 will touch down at Son Sant Joan runway at 11.10am. The plane will take off the night before at 9:05 p.m. US time (EST) from New York West Airport Newark. The flight time to Palma is estimated at 8 hours and 5 minutes. A Boeing 767-300 with 30 business class and 184 economy class seats will be used. According to media reports, the flight is almost fully booked.

The landing of the first plane from New York is eagerly awaited in Mallorca. Tourism associations and authorities hope that the direct connection to the USA will boost quality tourism on the island. A financially strong clientele is expected – especially families, traveling couples and older tourists – who use the hotel, gastronomy and shopping offers on Mallorca.

As was announced over the weekend, further connections to North America, including to Miami, Los Angeles and Canada, are being planned due to the brisk demand for the New York flights.
