Councillors in Kerry are calling for a reduction in the number of social housing developments by approved housing bodies, claiming that they will lead to antisocial behaviour problems, and advocating instead for a mix that includes options to buy. Councillor Bobby O’Connell has called for “no more than 20%” of the new 67-house development at Cahernard, Castleisland, to be allocated for social housing. A second motion by councillor Michael O’Shea called on the council “not to negotiate any more land deals with Approved Housing Bodies for social housing”. The construction work in Castleisland on the 67 units being jointly built by Focus Ireland and Cooperative Housing Ireland are all for social housing.
