Council rejects additional costs for the renovation of the Grotenburg

The Krefeld city council has rejected the last published additional costs for the renovation of the Grotenburg. In addition, a working group has been set up to accompany and intervene in the renovation.

It became known at the beginning of December that the renovation costs would increase to almost 17 million euros. The red-green coalition around Mayor Frank Meyer (SPD) wanted to finance the costs through a loan. The Krefeld city council rejected a corresponding application with 29 to 28 votes. The defendants are now demanding a justification for the enormous increase in costs.

In addition, some council members have bothered that the additional costs were only announced after the local election. But fundamental doubts were also expressed. “Is it justifiable that a city with 230,000 inhabitants sponsors three professional sports?” Asked FDP councilor Joachim Heitmann, for example.

From the ranks of the CDU it was said that one should not be surprised about the exit of the KFC investor and president Mikhail Ponomarev. After all, football is pure business for him, and CDU councilor Gero Hattstein expected that he would be thrown into the lucrative second division after four years without promotion. “As long as it is not clear how the stadium will be used in the long term, not a single euro may flow in,” he continued.

The KFC Uerdingen originally wanted to move back into the Grotenburg in the summer of 2021, whether that will happen is still unclear. At least in this third division season, the Krefeld team will still play in the MERKUR SPIEL-ARENA in Düsseldorf.
