What is the Council of Europe?
The so-called Venice Commission of the Council of Europe investigated the functioning of legal protection in our country at the request of the House of Representatives. The Venice Commission previously wrote harsh reports on the state of democracy and protection of human rights in Poland, Hungary and Malta.
Incidentally, the Council of Europe is separate from the European Union. It is an organization of which almost all European countries are part: 47 in total. It is a human rights organization, which was founded after the Second World War, with the aim of keeping each other in the loop when it comes to democratic functioning.
NOS correspondent Sander van Hoorn in Brussels speaks of harsh criticism of the Council of Europe, which will certainly be put forward by the House of Representatives. “These are not just a few points of: it could have been better. No, these are really fundamental questions about how you protect citizens against the whims of the government.”
