According to Rasmussen, the policy of the former US president would mean “surrender”
Donald Trump’s candidacy in the US presidential election could sabotage aid to Ukraine in the war and force Kiev into capitulation. This was stated by former NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen in an interview with Politico.
According to Rasmussen, the policy of Trump, who has repeatedly supported pro-Russian rhetoric regarding Ukraine, would mean “capitulation”.
He spoke of concerns that by winning the Republican nomination, Trump could destroy the bipartisan front in favor of Ukraine, as the former US president has repeatedly praised Putin as a smart strategist in the early days of the war and suggested that Kiev should have to agree to give Russia its territories.
“I call the possibility of Trump running a geopolitical disaster because his influence in the campaign would be devastating. It would bring his terrible ideas into the mainstream and make it difficult to get congressional support for the war in Ukraine,” Rasmussen says.
The former Secretary General of NATO emphasizes that, according to the latest public opinion polls in the US, there is a noticeable weakening of support for Ukraine, and Trump’s participation in the elections may further exacerbate this process.
“The simple fact that his thoughts are directed at a certain segment of the American public could push US policy in the wrong direction,” Rasmussen says.
The material also notes that there are only a few candidates in the Republican race who, according to Rasmussen, are better suited to preserve the values of US global leadership.
The most relevant might be Mike Pence, the former US vice president who has called for active aid to Ukraine and denounced Russia’s “apologists” in his own party, as well as Nikki Haley, the former ambassador to the United Nations, who supported giving Ukraine all weapons he needs.
“I really hope that the Republicans, not only from a European point of view, but also from a global point of view, will nominate a candidate who is much more attached to the American global leadership than Trump and the Trumpists,” emphasizes the former NATO secretary.
It should be noted that Anders Fogh Rasmussen is one of the advisers to the Ukrainian authorities, and he recently came to Washington to meet with members of Congress and representatives of the Joe Biden administration to lobby for increased supplies of heavy weapons to assisting Ukraine and providing it with long-term security guarantees.
