Could London Host a Super Bowl in the Future? NFL Commissioner Weighs In

“It is not impossible; it is something we have discussed. As the series of international matches develops perhaps that will be a possibility as we play more matches here,” the commissioner said in a forum held with British fans in the run-up to the duel of week 6 of the 2023 season.

The first regular season game played in the English capital was in 2007, when the New York Giants beat the Miami Dolphins 13-10 at Wembley Stadium.

Since then, 36 games have been played in this city, the most the league has played outside the United States, including this year’s Jaguars-Falcons, Bills-Jaguars and Titans-Ravens.

Goodell acknowledged that, despite the attractiveness of having an NFL championship game in London, they do not forget the importance of this event for American cities.

“I think that being able to play the Super Bowl in each of our cities is a huge economic boost for them and our fans; although we must recognize that here in London we also have great fans,” he explained.

The next three Super Bowls are scheduled to be played at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas in February 2024; the Caesars Superdome in New Orleans, in February 2025: and the Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, California, in February 2026.

The commissioner did not specify whether, starting in 2027, London would have the opportunity to be considered among the venues to host the dispute for the Lombardi trophy, but he did not completely rule out that possibility either.

“I think that is not ruled out, it is something that we believe would make sense, although for the moment we will maintain our formula of playing Super Bowls in cities that have an NFL franchise,” he stressed.
