After the upcoming European Parliament (EP) elections in the summer, Estonian Prime Minister Kaja Kallas could become the high representative of the European Union (EU) in matters of foreign and security policy, replacing Jousepa Borel, reports “Politico”.
According to “Politico” report, a scenario has been actively discussed behind the scenes of politics recently, according to which women would occupy the positions of the top leaders of the EU after the EP elections – the current President of the European Commission (EC) Ursula von der Leyen and the President of the EP Roberta Metsol would retain their positions, while for Danish Prime Minister Mette Fredriksen would become the president of the European Council, and Kallas would become the high representative for foreign and security policy issues.
“This is my dream team. It will send a very strong signal,” Politico quoted an anonymous source in diplomatic circles as saying.
An important factor in the appointment of Kallas as the head of the EU diplomatic service could be the fact that there are currently no Eastern European representatives in the EU’s highest positions. Considering the war in Ukraine, Eastern European countries believe that this region should get some leading positions in the EU, states “Politico”.
However, the publication emphasizes that no decisions have been made, many possible male candidates are also mentioned in the discussions, and candidates for high positions are often determined at the last minute, and the distribution of positions among the political forces will depend on the results of the upcoming EP elections in June.
EP elections in EU countries will be held from June 6 to 9, 2024. The new composition of the EC will start work in November.
Kaja Kallas, the daughter of former three-time European Commissioner and former Prime Minister of Estonia Sima Kallas, has led the last three Estonian governments since 2021. In 2014-2018, she was a member of the EP.
Last year, Kallas announced that he would like a candidate for the post of NATO Secretary General.
