Under the new owner, Crystal Dynamics got rid of the previous Square Enix shackle (so they don’t have to force games using the live service model).
Crystal Dynamics recently updated their social media pages with a new image celebrating their thirtieth anniversary. Well, we can observe three silhouettes at the top of the logo. For one, there’s Lara Croft. Which is fine, because he’s actually getting a new game on Unreal Engine 5, so we’ve got the treasure hunter down. But Raziel appears next to him on the one hand, and Gex on the other. Oops.
Raziel is a familiar character from Legacy of Kain: he was the protagonist of the two acts with the subtitle Soul Reaver, and Gex was the gecko that originally started as a killer app for the Panasonic 3DO, which received a PS1 port from the 2D platformer, and then came the two three-dimensional sequel (there were other ports, but let’s not discuss that here). Both characters have been quite neglected recently, except for the appearance of the Gex Jr. PS1 prototype, which we also wrote about.
Square Enix has registered at least two trademarks for Gex recently, the last one in February. This was before the sale of Crystal Dynamics (as well as Square Enix Montreal and Eidos Montréal) to the Embracer Group. This rapidly growing collective acquired several IPs, so that in addition to Deus Ex and Thief, Gex and Legacy of Kain also fell into the hands of Embracer led by Lars Wingefors. And let’s just remember what they wrote in the announcement when they announced the purchase…?
“Following the end of the quarter, we further strengthened our development capabilities and IP portfolio by signing agreements with Crystal Dynamics, Eidos Montreal and Square Enix Montreal, including Tomb Raider, Deus Ex, Thief and Legacy of Kain, as well as other About the purchase of IPs. The announcement received an overwhelming and positive response. We see great potential not only in sequels, but also in remakes, remasters, spinoffs, and transmedia projects within the group. We expect to close the transaction in the July-September period,” wrote Embracer.
Many people would be happy about that.
